Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is running for re-election against Democrat Charlie Crist, will be speaking at a rally sponsored by CatholicVote on Sunday. CatholicVote endorsed DeSantis earlier this month.
"Join us and @GovRonDeSantis at @avemariauniv for prayer, fellowship, and important updates from Team DeSantis,” CatholicVote tweeted recently. “This rally is FREE. Can't make it to Ave Maria? Stream the event online! Save your spot now!”
The rally will take place from 11:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sunday at Ave Maria University. Although it is open to the public, limited spots here are available and attendees must sign up in advance here.
CatholicVote President Brian Burch will be there, as will Ave Maria President Mark Middendorf, and “DeSantis will address supporters with words of hope,” CatholicVote said.
DeSantis graduated from Yale University and Harvard Law School, a CatholicVote biography says. At Yale, DeSantis earned a commission in the U.S. Navy as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer, the Navy’s team of lawyers. He deployed to Iraq and received the honorary Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service and the Iraq Campaign Medal.
Before becoming the 46th governor of Florida, DeSantis served as federal prosecutor and was elected to Congress in 2012 where he led efforts to impose congressional term limits and expose illegal IRS practices.
DeSantis is married to his wife, Casey, and they have three children.
CatholicVote endorsed DeSantis on Oct. 4. He was one of about three dozen candidates on the ballot this November to get CatholicVote’s backing.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more talented group of Catholic candidates," Burch said when the endorsements were announced. "We have a lot to be excited about this year.”
Burch also commented on races where CatholicVote might not be supporting a self-identifying Catholic: “I’ll take a non-Catholic who shares our values over a self-identified Catholic who hates our values any day of the week,” Burch said.
