President Joe Biden recently tweeted about his plan to sign a law that will codify Roe if his party wins enough votes in November, prompting Catholic News Agency to imply in a report that the move could backfire as it angers Catholic voters.

“The final say about your right to choose rests with you,” Biden tweeted on Wednesday. “If you do your part and vote, Democratic leaders in Congress will do their part. I’ll do my part. With your support, I will sign a law codifying Roe in January.”

In a Democratic National Committee speech at the Howard Theatre, he followed up on the matter. That speech was all about abortion because Democratic candidates are facing “uphill battles” in the polls, Catholic News Agency (CNA) reported

Biden said that when it comes to Roe, the 2022 midterms are “the most consequential election in history,” CNA’s report says.

Democrats currently hold the House and the Senate by very slim margins. But with all 435 House seats are up for election, and 35 seats in the Senate, that could change this November. CNA also said that 36 governorships are on the ballot.

Biden has called Republicans “extremists” and has talked about the possibility of a national abortion ban if the Republicans win control of Congress. With Biden’s approval rating and popularity at an all-time low, CNA suggested that Biden is trying to get voters fired up about the issue of abortion before the election, like he’s making it a one-issue vote.

“Today in America, there are women who have been turned away from emergency rooms while having miscarriages, losing wanted pregnancies, and told they need to wait until they are sicker before they get the care they need. Doctors and nurses fear they can face criminal charges,” Biden said, CNA reported.

That assertion was quickly negated by Live-Action, a pro-life advocacy group. On its website, the group has reported that abortion laws within states, specifically since Roe was overturned, all have provisions saying that treatment for miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies are still legal. Live-Action claims pro-choice advocates are just trying to “scare women” into believing the lie that they will not receive care if they have troublesome pregnancies. Live-Action listed the abortion laws in all 50 states to show this is clearly stated.

That Biden is so much in favor of abortion has left Catholic disheartened.

“Catholics are appalled by the unprecedented abortion extremism pursued by the nation’s second Catholic president,” CatholicVote President Brian Burch said in a statement. “While Americans struggle with record inflation, the president of the United States has nothing to offer but a pledge to expand the right to violently destroy innocent unborn children – up until birth and for any reason.”

He has called on American bishops to address these issues more publicly.

“We need Church leaders to step up and make clear that no Catholic can support candidates or policies that would make America one of the most extreme abortion nations in the world,” he said. https://catholicvote.org/biden-pledges-federal-abortion-mandate/

The Catechism states the Catholic Church's views on abortion: “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed as an ends or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law” (No. 2271).

Florida’s bishops are in accord with Church policy. Early this month, the Florida Catholic Bishops tweeted: “Today is Respect Life Sunday, which kicks off Respect Life Month! It's time to build a culture of life that recognizes the value of all human life. Stay tuned for more details throughout this month on how to walk with moms in need.”
