The Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee on Sunday celebrated the feast day of St. Isidore the Farmer, a devout worker who is credited with multiple miracles.

“Isidore is known for his great generosity to the poor and his kindness to animals,” the diocese posted on Facebook. “He was a hard worker who worked many miracles in his lifetime.

“Angels were seen working in his stead while St. Isidore attended Mass in the mornings, and angels were seen working alongside him, helping him accomplish much more than other workers. St. Isidore, thank you for modeling a life of both prayer and hard work. Please, pray for us!”

St. Isidore was born around the year 1070 in Madrid, Spain, a release on Catholic.org said. It reported that Isidore experienced celestial visions and was visited by angels, who sometimes helped him with his farm work, confirming the diocese’s post.

Pope Paul V beatified Isidore in 1619, and Pope Gregory XV canonized him in 1622. His feast day is celebrated on May 15.

A report from Saints Resource also cited the appearance of the angels, explaining that although St. Isidore's family was poor, they were very devoted to God. He took a job on a wealthy estate in Madrid and would attend Mass early in the morning before work. His fellow farmhands thought he was lazy since he got a late start, and some complained about him. The estate owner, Juan de Vargas, went to check in on Isidore's work and discovered two angels guiding the plow.

Vargas also gave credit to Isidore for saving the life of his daughter as well as the life of one of his horses, the Saints Resource report added.

St. Isidore was devoted to poor people and animals, a Franciscan Media report said. Besides the visiting angels, it is said that he was able to miraculously provide food for poor people.

Isidore is the patron saint of farmers, day laborers and the United States' National Rural Life Conference.
