The Diocese of St. Augustine, Florida, invited the faithful to participate in the opening liturgy of the Triduum Thursday.
"The Triduum begins,” the Diocese posted on its Facebook page. “Come, see the feet of the disciples being washed; join us at the table of the Last Supper and meditate on the beginning of Christ's passion. Will you keep vigil with Him- for just one hour?”
The Holy Thursday Mass was celebrated with Bishop Estévez at 7:00 p.m. at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Jacksonville, Florida, according to the Facebook post.
The Easter Triduum begins on the evening of Holy Thursday and lasts through Good Friday and Holy Saturday, culminating on the evening of Easter Sunday, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Liturgically, these three days are considered one.
Mass on the evening of Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper and begins the Easter Triduum, the USCCB website stated. Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist during the Last Supper, offering his body and blood to his disciples in the form of bread and wine.
Jesus also instituted the priesthood, entrusting to his apostles the legacy of the Church, according to the USCCB. During Holy Thursday Mass, the priest or celebrant washes the feet of several participants, imitating Jesus' humility in washing his disciples' feet.
As the Triduum ends Sunday, the faithful celebrate Jesus' Resurrection, three days after his crucifixion, according to Christianity.com. Jesus' Resurrection not only confirmed that he was the true son of God, but also granted eternal life in Heaven to those who believe in him. The Resurrection is the cornerstone of the Christian faith.
