The Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee celebrated its annual Chrism Mass, during which priests consecrated the holy oils that will be used by the diocese for the next year.

"Many gathered at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart this morning for a beautiful Chrism Mass," the diocese posted on Facebook after the Mass on Tuesday, April 12. "The oil of the sick and the oil of the catechumens were blessed, the holy chrism was consecrated and our priests renewed their commitment to ministry."

The Chrism Mass is traditionally celebrated during Holy Week, a report on the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops website said.

Holy Week starts with Palm Sunday and ends on Easter, a report on Britannica.com said. Catholics commemorate Judas' betrayal of Jesus, the institution of the Eucharist, Jesus' Passion and Crucifixion, his burial and his Resurrection during Holy Week.

During the Chrism Mass, the priest consecrates three oils: the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of the Catechumens, and the Chrism.

Each oil has a special purpose in the Church. A report on SimplyCatholic.com explains each of them.

The Oil of the Sick is used in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the Simply Catholic report said. During this sacrament, a priest lays hands on a sick or elderly person, prays for them, and anoints their head and hands with oil. The Oil of the Catechumens is used to anoint children and adults before baptism. Chrism oil is used for a person's consecration to God, such as during the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Bishops across the nation celebrate a Chrism Mass each year, at which they consecrate enough of each of the three oils for every church in their diocese to use throughout the year.
