Parishioners in the Diocese of St. Augustine will have a chance to learn more about the man after whom their city is named. Paul DiGeorgio will give a presentation on St. Augustine of Hippo at 7 p.m. Monday as part of the diocese's Lenten Speaker Series: All You Holy Men and Women.

The event at Marywood Retreat and Conference Center, Villa B, will be livestreamed on the diocese's Facebook page and YouTube channel (youtube.com/dosacatholics), the diocese said in a Wednesday Facebook post.

"St. Augustine is one of the best known of all the saints, but we might feel like we know less about him than some of the others," the post said. "It might be the case that we know more than we think we do, because so many of the saint's philosophical and theological ideas are fundamental aspects of our faith—from sin and free will, to the pursuit of knowledge, to the right way to go about political life. If we uncover some of these ideas, we may find that we are much more familiar with St. Augustine than we realized."

St. Augustine of Hippo was born in the fourth century in Numidia (now called Algeria), a Britannica.com report said. He was Bishop of Hippo for over 30 years and is still regarded today as one of the most important Christian thinkers in the history of the Church. Some of his writings, including "Confessions" and "The City of God," are still read by many.

When he was a young man, Augustine lived a depraved life. His mother, St. Monica, had a vision that he would eventually come back to the faith, so she remained close to him and prayed for him, a report on FranciscanMedia.org said.

Augustine is a Doctor of the Church. That official title is one that a pope may bestow on a person whose contributions to the Church are highly significant and lasting, a report on CrossroadsInitiative.com said. Only 36 individuals have been given this title.

There are three requirements for being named a Doctor of the Church: "1) holiness that is truly outstanding, even among saints; 2) depth of doctrinal insight; and 3) an extensive body of writings which the church can recommend as an expression of the authentic and life-giving Catholic Tradition," the Crossroads Initiative report said.
