Recently, the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee published a Facebook post celebrating President's Day. The post encouraged the faithful to pray for the country's leaders.
"Happy President's Day! Join us in prayer today for our nation and its leaders," the post read, with one of the tags being #GodBlessAmerica.
If you're in need of a specific prayer for the occasion, the United States Conference offers this one: "God our Father, You guide everything in wisdom and love. Accept the prayers we offer for our nation. In your goodness, watch over those in authority so that people everywhere may enjoy freedom, security and peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen."
To date, no U.S. president has been born in the state of Florida. Only 21 of the 50 states have been the birthplace of the president, with most of those states only having one president born there. More than half of the men who have served as president were born in either Virginia, Ohio, New York or Massachusetts. Virginia is the state with the most presidential births.
While we haven't had one Florida president, we have been fortunate enough to have not one, but two Catholic presidents. The first was President John F. Kennedy, who had to overcome the hurdles of the anti-Catholic bias to win the presidency in 1960. The second is our current president, Joe Biden. Thankfully, Biden opposition didn't have to overcome as many faith-based obstacles as his predecessor. Thanks to President Biden, Catholicism is no longer one of the two-least represented religions in office. That distinction now belongs to Congregationalist, which has had one practitioner in office: Calvin Coolidge.
President's Day, officially known as Washington's Birthday, is a federal holiday honoring all who have served as the president of our nation. It has been observed since 1879.
