The Diocese of Orlando recently honored The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and reminded followers why his actions are important to celebrate.

The Diocese of Orlando said it is important to remember the virtues that King stood for.

“Let us remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – a man of course, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service,” the Diocese of Orlando wrote on Facebook.

King received a Nobel Prize for his efforts in leading the civil rights movement at the age of 35, which at the time made him the youngest recipient of the award. He was awarded more than $50,000 in prize money, which he donated to further the civil rights movement, according to The Nobel Prize.

History reported that despite King’s peaceful demonstrations, he was the frequent target of harassment and continued to preach peacefully despite an assassination attempt in the fall of 1958.

King was in Memphis, Tenn., in April of 1968 to back sanitation workers that were on strike and was assassinated on the evening of April 4 while standing on the balcony of his hotel at age 39, according to History.

According to History, the night before the assignation, King gave a speech that foreshadowed his untimely death: “I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

NPR reports that King was gifted at giving speeches, with one of the most famous being his “I Have a Dream" speech, which he gave on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in August 1963.

During the oration, he famously said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
