Catholic Charities Jacksonville presented Refugee Welcome Week through Nov. 8 to bring attention and support to the organization's programs assisting refugees from Afghanistan relocating to northeast Florida.
"This week-long initiative is designed to raise awareness of the plight of Afghan refugees, our agency’s role in resettling them in our city, and the steps we can all take to support them as they restart and rebuild their lives," the Diocese of St. Augustine posted on Facebook.
Catholic Charities Jacksonville expects to settle more than 200 Afghans through March 2022 as part of the Afghan Placement and Assistance (APA) initiative, the organization states on its website. Catholic Charities Jacksonville Associate Director Matt Schmitt said in a local news report that the organization helps refugees settle into their new homes by providing the necessities and support they need.
“We register them for Social Security benefits. We help them get into their first apartment. We set up their first apartment, and as part of the program, we receive donated furniture in like-new or gently new condition, so we outfit their apartment with home goods, food,” Schmitt said to television station News4Jax.
CCJ also announced the Chartrand Family Fund will match $75,000 donated through the end of the year and encourages parishioners to contribute through CCJ's REfugee Match Challenge.
There are approximately 95,000 Afghan refugees who will be resettling in the U.S. between now and Sept. 2022, and over 1,000 of those are expected to be resettling in Florida, according to WFLA.com.
