St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Bonita Springs recently shared with its parishioners some reflections on the solemnity of All Saints Day and other holy days in November.
"Catholic activist Mary 'Mother' Jones famously urged: 'Pray for the dead— and fight like hell for the living,'" the message, published in the church's Nov. 1 bulletin, said. It urged them to remember the work and words of those who have not been officially sainted, yet have done the work of the Lord nonetheless.
Jones tried to add volume to the voices of those who were not given hearing by the larger society.
"Mother Jones won't ever be a saint on the books, but she did as saints do: listened carefully to the concerns of her times, then went in punching for the needs of the oppressed," the message stated.
The reflection challenged parishioners in the time of All Saints to consider who in the world may need their voice and "boxing skills."
