The Oct. 25 bulletin of Saint Katherine Drexel Parish in Cape Coral spoke of Mwanga II, who came to power in the African kingdom of Buganda in 1884.
He viewed Christianity as the biggest threat to his power and ordered the execution of 55 people who had converted to the Anglican and Catholic churches. The victims are known as the Ugandan Martyrs. One was named Charles Lwanga.
“It is as if you are pouring water on me," the bulletin quoted Lwanga's words as he was about to be executed. "Please repent and become a Christian like me.”
He and the other Catholic victims were later canonized.
“We may never be asked to affirm our belief in the threat of death, but we are given chances every day to share our faith,” the bulletin said. “Notice the small opportunities you might have this week to share your faith, and ask the Holy Spirit for the courage to do it.
"Saint Charles Lwanga, pray for us!”
