St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church issued the following announcement on Oct. 25
Gospel
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”
He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
1. How do you live out the two commandments in today’s Gospel? If you do not know your neighbor, how important is it to care for others?
2. Reflect on the way you act according to the two commandments. Do you have room for improvement? Identify at least one thing that you can change to do so
3. Jesus tells us the greatest commandment is “You shall love the Lord, your God.” Do you keep your life centered on this commandment? In what ways?
4. Thinking about the second commandment, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” how do you like to be loved and treated? Do you treat others that way – especially those who have different beliefs than your own?
5. What barriers are in your life that prevent you from fully obeying these two commandments? If you are able to identify some of them, consider this also: is it possible to love all of our neighbors?
6. We are called to put love into action; this is the heart of our Church. Do you think love itself leads to action? Do your actions adequately reflect the love you have for others?
7. “Love everyone, but you don’t have to be everyone’s friend.” What emotions are stirred up when you hear this statement?
