In a note published in the Sept. 13 bulletin, Fr. Justin Vakko of Our Lady of the Springs Catholic Church in Ocala reminded parishioners to forgive as they have been forgiven.

The reading from Sirach reminds us that it is foolish to hold grudges and wise to forgive; for if one cannot give mercy, how can one expect to receive mercy? The responsorial Psalm speaks of God's merciful love. In the second reading, Paul reminds us that we are to forgive because we belong to Christ, who taught us to forgive. Through the Gospel parable of the two debtors, Jesus teaches that there should be no limit to our forgiveness and no strings attached.

There is no value in holding grudges. Forgiving others opens the door for God to forgive us our sins.

Though we have been hurt, we can still find room in our hearts to forgive, Fr. Vakko said in the bulletin. Holding onto anger keeps us in bondage and frustration, while forgiveness liberates us and allows us to heal. It can be as simple as wishing God's blessing on the one who has caused harm.
