While none of us want to suffer or see someone we care about suffer, Jesus asks us to carry our cross with Him, because suffering and death are a part of life.

"Jesus, who did nothing but love and heal, and show compassion for others, suffered and died that we might have life— eternal life," Bishop Gregory Parkes said in the Aug. 30 bulletin of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church.

Not only did Jesus suffer for us, but if we follow and believe in Him, we will also suffer and be persecuted.

"We are often called to bear many crosses in our lives whether they be physical, emotional, or even financial," Parkes said in the bulletin. "Jesus Christ strengthens us to be able to take up these crosses and follow Him in faith. The Saints of our faith provide a wonderful example of people who endured great suffering; and for many, even death because of their faith. That’s why we pray for their intercession in helping us during our times of trial."

Following Jesus with our crosses will help give our suffering meaning as we offer it up to Jesus for the good of others and ourselves.
