Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Community in Winter Park recognized the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist in the Aug. 23 edition of the church’s bulletin.

"The drunken oath of a king with a shallow sense of honor, a seductive dance and the hateful heart of a queen combined to bring about the martyrdom of John the Baptist,” the bulletin said.

Parishioners were reminded that God sent John the Baptist to make way for the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

“Each of us has a calling to which we must listen," the bulletin said. "No one will ever repeat the mission of John, and yet all of us are called to that very mission. It is the role of the Christian to witness of Jesus. Whatever our position in this world, we are called to be disciples of Christ."

The church celebrated the Memorial of the Martyrdom of John the Baptist on Aug. 29th.
