Resurrection Catholic Church issued the following announcement on Aug. 30

Impetuous Peter. Over the last few Sunday’s he has repeatedly spoken up while the other disciples hung back. He alone challenged Jesus to command him to walk on water during a terrible storm. He alone confessed Jesus as the Son of the living God, after which he is told that he would be the rock upon which Jesus will build his church. But now, just five verses later, when he boldly rebukes Jesus, Jesus tells him, “Get behind me, Satan!” (Matthew 16:23). It’s always high drama when Peter is around! In the fist reading, Jeremiah is fed up with the drama.

Thanks to his prophesying, he has been derided and shunned. He’s angry at God for having him deliver nothing but bad news. But in the end he realizes he can’t avoid it. God’s word is the fire in his heart. He cannot hold it in. Obviously, Peter could not hold in his fervor either. For this he is the rock. A rock can be an obstacle o climb over, but it can also provide a foundation that gives strength and support. Jeremiah and Peter are our foundations, offering themselves as living sacrifices, providing a model for us, the church, in faithfully accepting the fire and the cross.

When have you felt fire burning in your heart that had to be released?
