The Lord provides for all our needs, the Rev. David Vivero of All Souls Catholic Church in Sanford wrote in his Aug. 2 weekly bulletin message, but what about Jesus?

“The hand of the Lord feeds us, and answers all our needs,” Vivero quoted from the Bible.

But how does Jesus provide for Himself?

"Today’s gospel gives us a glimpse how Jesus, on hearing about the death of John the Baptist, was deeply in need of a quiet place, in a boat, making a way out from His personal storm," Vivero wrote. "Evidently, right after this brief retreat, it was not long that He began teaching and nourishing a great crowd again."

After hearing of the death of His cousin, Jesus used five loaves and two fish to feed a crowd of people. The message from this is that God provides for us. He creates in the world. Jesus created multiple loaves of bread and fish for the people.

"God creates the world, provides us with daily bread, to attend to our needs Himself by accompanying us every moment of it," Vivero wrote.

But before providing for the crowd, Jesus gave His followers a teachable moment by telling them to feed the crowd by themselves. But His followers knew they could not do so with five loaves and two fish, and Jesus knew this as well.

"When Jesus received the five loaves and two fish, we thank God He did not say, 'Is this all you've got?'" Vivero wrote. "In the same manner, like our weekend experience, we as a church accept and offer the blessings and challenges of life as we offer them all to God. To give as we’ve been given. To forgive as we too have been forgiven."

But the greatest lesson Jesus taught that day was to share what little His followers had to make it enough for everyone.
