Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Merritt Island, Florida, has vowed to follow the safest practices as the state continues to battle COVID-19.
In the parish bulletin, Fr. Matt Mello said that for the time being, social distancing and mask-wearing will be required.
“Unfortunately, many folks are becoming lax about following the CDC protocols,” Mello said in the bulletin. “Our old way of life and our thriving economy cannot return until this virus is gone. That will take time and we all need to do our part to stay healthy and stop the spread of this disease. These are temporary measures that must be in place until science and data tell us it is safe to lift them.”

Divine Mercy will no longer require reservations for Mass. All attendees will be required to wear masks.
“No one likes wearing them but it is a sacrifice we make for the common good.” Mello said.
Mello asked parishioners to receive the Eucharist in their hands, not request that it be placed on the tongues.
“For the safety of all, Communion will only be given in the hand,” he said.
Mello acknowledged that the safety guidelines are cumbersome and he urged people to be patient.
“This is a time of sacrifice for the health and safety of others,” he said. “I know we are up to the challenge and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the cooperation, generosity and kindness you have been showing during these trying times.”
