Monsignor Terence Hogan of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church and School in Parkland, Florida, focused on the power of forgiveness after the nation experienced violence in protests that began after the death of George Floyd.
"How do we deal with violence and anger within our own lives and in the lives of our family and in our society?" the Rev. Hogan said in his Pastor's Corner video message. "But the beauty of God's love and forgiveness is the face that he not only forgives each of us, but he forgets those sins also. That's the hard part. That's the rough part. Because for us, yes we can eventually forgive somebody, but to forget what they have done is not so easy."
The Rev. Hogan gave pointers on how to forgive and forget during these troubling times.
"The first thing is to admit the fact that we're not the greatest of loving one another," he said in the video. "We're human beings. And we make mistakes."
Every human being in the world makes mistakes as well.
"If we're trying to forgive say a particular person, we have to stop doing unkind things. We have to stop playing games with them," Hogan said in the video. "We have to stop saying bad things and unkind things about this person who we're having trouble forgiving."
Hogan said forgiveness can be achieved by no longer saying bad things about this person behind their back. Forgiveness can never be achieved if a person keeps making mistakes and doing bad things to a person.
"Do something very positive for this person," Hogan said in the video. "Pray for them. Pray for that other person and it His grace, God's grace, will begin to work."
Through doing something nice and praying, a person is giving up their hatred for another person, which brings them one step closer to forgiving and forgetting.
"To forgive is very difficult. Violence is easy," Hogan said in the video message. "To forgive is difficult, but it can be done."
